Since starting The Spite Diet I’ve made a point of searching for the best food options for a healthier lifestyle. My usual go-to for breakfast turned out to have more fat than the meals I was making for lunch and dinner during the diet.

So, I started searching for a better option, one that was just as convenient as my Chocolate Fudge Pop Tarts, and affordable. I kept coming back to Oats Overnight.

I’d had the subscription before, but honestly I got bored of it, and kept forgetting to rinse the bottle 🤦‍♀️. So I canceled with several pouches in my cabinet. Well, I went back the other night and found the box of neglected leftovers, and was going to fix me up a batch for the next morning.

But they had expired.

So decided I resubscribe. This go ‘round, I selected all different flavors, some new to me, some I remember enjoying the last time. The following is a review of all the flavors I received. This post will be several weeks in the making. Let’s get into it!

Mixed Berries & Cream

Front pouch
Facts and ingredients
“New to me” flavor. Enjoyed on January 20.

I poured the pouch into the free (with subscription) Blender Bottle and added 8oz of vanilla almond milk to the line on the bottle. I threw it in the fridge the night before around 10pm. I took it to work with me to enjoy around 8:30am.

  • Obstacles: (large ingredients that require additional effort) berries: not a ton and pleasant, fun to chew the rehydrated blueberries. minimal effort. 8/10
  • Flavor: berries and cream will always be a great flavor in my opinion. No unpleasant aftertaste. 9/10
  • Texture: basically thin oatmeal. Expected. No graininess. nothing unexpected. 9/10
  • Overall: easy to eat, enjoyable breakfast, fits well into my diet plan. Tons of protein.

9.5/10

Dark Chocolate Sea Salt

“New to me” flavor. Enjoyed on January 21. Images screen shot from OatsOvernight.com
  • Obstacles: chocolate chunks. Small, hard but not difficult to chew. Seem to settle to the bottom. 7/10
  • Flavor: CHOCOLATE. It’s delicious. Tastes very much like a really good chocolate ice cream. Except for, you know, oatmeal and chia seeds. 10/10
  • Texture: no graininess. Definitely needed a good shake again, to disperse the ingredients. Expected texture for good overnight oats. No complaints 9/10
  • Overall: great flavor, good texture, a few obstacles. 8.5/10

Flavor in Development: Cookies and Cream

Enjoyed in January 24.
Via Oats Overnight Instagram
  • Obstacles: besides the typical ingredients from their base mix, like chia seeds, I had no issues. Ingredients list says cookies crumbs, but I imagine they absorbed the almond milk and got soggy. Like I like my Oreos. 10/10
  • Flavor: first let me tell you, when I opened up the package, I didn’t know what flavor it was. It smelled like chocolate chip cookies. I saw that there was cocoa powder in the mix based on color. I wasn’t mad. the flavor is delicious I can taste the chocolate cookie flavor, and it a good pairing for oats. Would enjoy again. 9.8/10
  • Texture: classic OO texture. No graininess, no inconsistency or bitterness. The cookie crumbs it touts in the ingredients maybe got lost in the milk overnight. But I can still taste the flavor. 10/10
  • Overall: amazing. Top of the list so far. 9.5/10

Strawberries & Cream

Enjoyed January 29. Images via their website.
  • Obstacles: none detected. Pieces of strawberries are small enough that they blend right in, in fact, in this batch they might either be a little too small or sparse. 7/10
  • Flavor: delicious strawberries and cream flavor. Not quite as potent a flavor as the Quaker Oats version of S&C oatmeal. But this taste less artificial because of the milder flavor. 8/10
  • Texture: there’s a little bit of a mouth feel after you have a gulp and swallow. Not grainy, but like a residue? I’m sure if you take a swig of water it’ll go away. Otherwise, it’s typical classic Oats Overnight texture. 8/10
  • Overall: a more traditional, classic, milder flavor for OO. Could use more strawberry but not a lot. But it also could have been a “luck of the batch” issue. 8/10

Green Apples & Cinnamon

Enjoyed February 24. Imagines via their website.
  • Obstacles: small chunks of diced dried apples. They rehydrate well, and give a bit of chew to the mix. Not unpleasant and a subtle not overpowering taste. 8/10
  • Flavor: it’s a very light subtle flavor. Not overpowering or overbearing. It’s a good neutral flavor. It’s not going to surprise you or be overwhelming in the morning. There’s no odd aftertaste either. Nothing to write home about either. 7.5/10
  • Texture: typical overnight oats texture, drinkable with little obstacles to have to break down or avoid. No graininess unwanted textures for overnight oats. 9/10
  • Overall: good simple breakfast that’s not overwhelming or too much for one’s senses first thing. 8/10

So far.

To be honest, I’ve gotten bored. There’s been a few times over the course of a month that I just did not want to drink breakfast. The flavor options I had or the one I’d premade the night before did not thrill me.

I’ve also had a lot of stress of late, and wanted something more fulfilling in a enjoyment sense. Basically meaning not healthy. So, I’d let the oats I’d made go bad or just skip making them altogether.

It’s important when your on a health journey where you adjust your diet to what works best for you to eat foods you enjoy, not just what seems healthy. Boredom can lead to making decisions that are counterproductive to your goals.

I’ve been trying to interchange my oats with other options, like a protein shake and bar. While I’m still not perfect at eating, meal prep, and all things The Spite Diet, I’m trying. And I’m a long way from giving up.

Important Spite Diet update coming soon!

The Product

Oats Overnight is a company serving overnight oats mailed straight to your door (or PO Box in my case). You can choose from multiple options, and there’s even a subscription (which I chose). The Oats are all high in protein, and gluten free. You can use milk or milk alternative (never water), and you get a free Blender Bottle!

The flavors I received were:

  • Peach Upside Down Cake
  • Strawberries & Cream
  • PeanutButter Cookie Dough Cacao Crunch
  • Maple Pancakes
  • Green Apple Cinnamon
  • Blueberry Cobbler
  • Mocha Dream
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana
  • Dark Chocolate Cherry (flavor in development)

The Review

Convenient: the only times I did not have these for breakfast were my days off and days I was too lazy to poor 8 ounces of vanilla almond milk in the shaker bottle. There were two of those lazy days.

All you do is pour in your milk or milk alternative, pour in your chosen flavor, shame vigorously for a few seconds to mix. Throw that puppy in the fridge and grab it in the morning for a quick breakfast! I had mine while driving to work.

Flavor: I enjoyed every flavor. The only one I did not like as much was the Mocha Dream. I’m not a coffee drinker and I’m (supposed to be) avoiding caffeine. This was the only one that had caffeine. I think my favorite is between the Peach Upside Down Cake and Blueberry Cobbler! But ask me tomorrow I might change my mind.

The consistency is a thin oatmeal, obviously, with bits that need chewing though if you really wanted to drink it, it wouldn’t be hard. Heck, get ya a boba straw abs slurp it right up.

All the flavors seemed to be perfectly sweet for me, and I’m assuming the sweetened vanilla almond milk contributes to that. But at this point I couldn’t imagine having it with anything else!

Benefits: I did not stay full until my break two hours after I’d finished my oats. But I didn’t have that shlumpy feeling I get after a greasy fast foot breakfast, and I wasn’t hungry as soon as when I had my “I’m late I’m late for a work day” pop tart.

Cost: I ordered the Party Pack (shown above) and I made it a subscription. That gave me 10% off. Subscription came with added benefits.

Oats Overnight

I ordered 16 meals, and my subscription came with a free blender bottle and bottles for life.

Comparison

Other Breakfast

Cost: If I (get myself up early enough to) stop by a fast food place for breakfast every morning I pay an average of $7.50 per breakfast. For 16 breakfasts that’s $120!

Calories: Hardee’s Frisco Breakfast sandwich (my fav) 430 (Jebus Crist!) hash rounds 230-excluding the drink because I’m embarrassed.

Oats Overnight

Cost: Oats Overnight (excluding the almond milk as my husband buys it for the family and the oats are MINE) at $3.09 per meal, $49.50 for 16.

Calories: Oats Overnight: the highest calorie breakfast Mocha Dream: 300 Lowest: Blueberry Cobbler: 280

Problems

I’m being 100% honest here: the only problem I had was getting the last gulp or two out of the bottom of the bottle while driving a full size truck on a two late road through a town. The thicker bits tend to settle in the bottom so your left wanting.

You could be smarter than me and (a) not Oats and Drive or (b) wait until you’re parked and down the last bit.

Conclusion: Will I Buy Again?

If you can’t already tell, yes. In fact the only reason I remembered to write this review is because they sent me an email saying my subscription is about due, do I want to edit my order? I asked to switch out the Mocha Dream for either Orange Creamsicle (which is a last chance flavor) or Mint Chocolate Chip. Not sure I should be having dessert for breakfast but honey, I’m 37. Ain’t no one telling me what to do!

The Woodsheep Live: a Review

On Friday October 7th, I ventured out of the sight of my toddler, by myself, to a place where I wasn’t working. The feeling was remarkable, truly. I so rarely have the opportunity to steal away and make time for myself, and this was one of those rare chances.

My destination: the May Lodge, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, Prestonsburg, KY

Reason: to see “The Woodsheep” perform at “Friday’s After Five” a weekly live music show held, you guessed it, every Friday.

The Woodsheep are based out of Morehead, KY where they are students at the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music. They are comprised of Andrew Preston, Austin Tackett, Melissa Caskey, and Matt Holleran. They recently released an album called “Watching Mars” and recently completed a multi-state tour. This Friday The Woodsheep where joined by Caroline Cooely from the band The TeddyBones.

Friday I arrived late, mid song, but was not deterred. The crowd was moderate, although I think it would have been larger had the local festival “Jenny Wiley Days” not been in full swing. Yes, Mrs Wiley is popular in these parts.

I was quite excited to see The Woodsheep for a few reasons. One, my last live music show was probably about three years ago. Two, I’ve been following The Woodsheep since before they were called The Woodsheep. Three: a good friend whom I had not seen in several years would be there. And finally, four: I would finally get to meet, in person, Andrew Preston.

Honestly I had no idea what I expected. Good music, yes. And considering I had been listening to their debut album “Watching Mars” on repeat for three days, I knew that was coming.

But the fact that they liked to chat with the audience, laughed a lot, and were genuinely in good spirits made the show that much more enjoyable. They are all exceptionally talented, have a unique sound, and quite frankly are fantastic performers.

The Woodsheep’s music can be described as folk or Americana. But I feel as if it really cannot be classified into any single genre, and that’s a good thing. Friday they played not only songs from their record, but individual songs they’d written. They also showcased covers of popular songs.

If I am being completely honest their spirited rendition of “Fergalicious” is my favorite version of the song. I regret not recording video to share with you all!

The final song of the evening was from their album and one of my favorites: “Live Simply”. It’s a catchy tune, with a great message and a lovely sound. I frequently have it stuck in my head. I sang along with them as they played and enjoyed every minute!

After they played, Andrew, whom I’ve known for a few years now, came off the stage and greeted me. This might not seem like much to you, but I’ve known this lovely soul only through screen and song and meeting him in person has been on my bucket list! Had the hour not been late and my toddler restless at home, I’d have stayed later, and met the whole band.

I cannot wait for my next opportunity to see The Woodsheep perform, and tap my toes to their sweet sound. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and it will be a lovely memory!

You can find out more about The Woodsheep, including tour dates, videos, and how to purchase their debut album “Watching Mars” on their website and on Facebook! Be sure to check out their  video for “Live Simply” available Tuesday October 11! I’ve not seen it yet, but I’m told it’s great!

Check these guys out, you’ll be glad you did!

As always, thanks for reading!

P. S.: Andrew, I’m still waiting on a 3X shirt 😉
